| A new interpretation of the heavy element abundances in metal-deficient stars Observations of element abundances in extremely metal-deficient starsare reviewed. Particular attention is given to trends in the abundancesof the neutron capture products yttrium, barium, and europium. Thevariations in Y/Fe and Ba/Fe with Fe/H are found to defy simpleexplanation in the context of current theories: the conventionalinterpretation of these abundances as resulting from s-processing may beincorrect. It is suggested rather, that the observed trends follow in anatural and straightforward manner from the assumption that the Y and Bain the most extreme metal-poor stars represent products of r-processnucleosynthesis. Implications for galactic evolution and nucleosynthesisare briefly discussed.
