Simultaneous UV and optical observations of sigma G an RS CVn-like star: Preliminary results Some UV spectra of sigma Gem are discussed. The ground-basedobservations include medium dispersion (40 A/mm) optical spectra and UBVphotoelectric photometry. The binary system belongs to the long-periodgroup. The width at the base of the K line of Mg II was found tocorrespond to 430 + or - 20 km/s, implying a value Msubv=-4.9 + or -0.3. This improbably large luminosity for a Ki III star indicates thatthe Weiler-Oegele relation does not work in this case. The shortwavelength low resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer spectrashow the strong activity of the system. The long wavelength spectrumshows only the resolved Mg doublet and a trace of rising continuum atthe long wavelength end. Ground based UBV data are in agreement withother observations.
