Chromospheric Ca II Emission in Nearby F, G, K, and M Stars We present chromospheric Ca II H and K activity measurements, rotationperiods, and ages for ~1200 F, G, K, and M type main-sequence stars from~18,000 archival spectra taken at Keck and Lick Observatories as a partof the California and Carnegie Planet Search Project. We have calibratedour chromospheric S-values against the Mount Wilson chromosphericactivity data. From these measurements we have calculated medianactivity levels and derived R'HK, stellar ages,and rotation periods from general parameterizations for 1228 stars,~1000 of which have no previously published S-values. We also presentprecise time series of activity measurements for these stars.Based on observations obtained at Lick Observatory, which is operated bythe University of California, and on observations obtained at the W. M.Keck Observatory, which is operated jointly by the University ofCalifornia and the California Institute of Technology. | The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.
| Radial Velocities for 889 Late-Type Stars We report radial velocities for 844 FGKM-type main-sequence and subgiantstars and 45 K giants, most of which had either low-precision velocitymeasurements or none at all. These velocities differ from the standardstars of Udry et al. by 0.035 km s-1 (rms) for the 26 FGKstandard stars in common. The zero point of our velocities differs fromthat of Udry et al.: =+0.053km s-1. Thus, these new velocities agree with the best knownstandard stars both in precision and zero point, to well within 0.1 kms-1. Nonetheless, both these velocities and the standardssuffer from three sources of systematic error, namely, convectiveblueshift, gravitational redshift, and spectral type mismatch of thereference spectrum. These systematic errors are here forced to be zerofor G2 V stars by using the Sun as reference, with Vesta and day sky asproxies. But for spectral types departing from solar, the systematicerrors reach 0.3 km s-1 in the F and K stars and 0.4 kms-1 in M dwarfs. Multiple spectra were obtained for all 889stars during 4 years, and 782 of them exhibit velocity scatter less than0.1 km s-1. These stars may serve as radial velocitystandards if they remain constant in velocity. We found 11 newspectroscopic binaries and report orbital parameters for them. Based onobservations obtained at the W. M. Keck Observatory, which is operatedjointly by the University of California and the California Institute ofTechnology, and on observations obtained at the Lick Observatory, whichis operated by the University of California.
| Rotation, turbulence and evidence for magnetic fields in southern dwarfs We model high-resolution spectra using a simple radiative transferanalysis to derive projected rotational velocities (v sin i) andmacroturbulent velocity dispersions (v_mac) for 49 southern dwarf stars(including many first-ever measurements). We compare our results withprevious values, and estimate rotation periods (P_rot) and sin i valueswhere possible. We confirm that v_mac generally decreases withdecreasing temperature for T_eff >= 5000 K. Magnetically active starstend to show enhanced values of v_mac. This may be due to a differencein the mean stellar convective properties, a change in the mean stellartemperature structure, or a combination of both. We identify a group ofstars that exhibit correlations between the derived velocities and lineLande g_eff values, implying the presence of significant surfacemagnetic flux.
| HeI D3 absorption and its relation to rotation and activity in G and K dwarfs. We have obtained high resolution, high S/N spectra of the He I D3 line(5876 Å) for 53 stars. Combining these data with previousmeasurements, we investigate correlations between the flux absorbed byD3, F_D3_, rotation and other stellar activity indicators for a set of76 G and K dwarfs. We find that F_D3_{prop.to}P_rot_^-1.2^ forP_rot_>=4days. For P_rot_<4days, F_D3_ behaviour depends onspectral type, either remaining roughly constant (G stars), decreasing(K stars), or even going into emission (a few late K stars). We studycorrelations between D3 and chromospheric (Ca II HK), transition region(C IV 1550Å) and coronal emission, and find, for P_rot_>4days,F_D3_{prop.to}{DELTA}F_HK_^1.5^, F_D3_{prop.to}F_CIV_^0.7^, andF_D3_{prop.to}F_X_^0.6^, respectively. Thus, D3 has a responseintermediate between Ca II HK and C IV in low to moderate activitystars, consistent with its formation in the upper chromosphere. Our datasuggest that the maximum flux absorbed by D3 isF_D3_{prop.to}T_eff_^9.3^=~2x10^5^erg/cm^2^/s in G stars (equivalentwidths Wlambda_<=80mÅ), and about 40% of that value(or Wlambda_<=50mÅ) in K stars, less than predictedby current theoretical models. We discuss the implications of ourresults for stellar activity and He I line formation, and suggest futureavenues of study.

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| SANTIAGO 91, a right ascension catalogue of 3387 stars (equinox J2000). The positions in right ascension of 3387 stars belonging to the Santiago67 Catalogue, observed with the Repsold Meridian Circle at Cerro Calan,National Astronomical Observatory, during the period 1989 to 1994, aregiven. The average mean square error of a position, for the wholeCatalogue, is +/-0.009 s. The mean epoch of the catalogue is 1991.84.
| Lithium in RS CVn binaries and related chromospherically active stars. I - Observational results The present survey of the Li I 6708 A line in a sample of spectral typeG and K stars with luminosity classes III, IV, and V shows that manyK-type stars in the sample, including a large number of RS CVn binaries,show an anomalously high Li abundance relative to typical inactive starsof the same spectral type. Only a few stars in the sample are likely tobe premain sequence objects of stars which have recently arrived on themain sequence. Mechanisms that could lead to the enhanced Li absorptionin chromospherically active stars are discussed; these encompass largecool spots on the stellar surface, the production of Li in stellarflares by spallation reactions, and the evolution from main-sequenceprogenitors without, or with very shallow, outer convective zones.
| Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G- and K-type stars. IV - Evolved stars of the old disk population Modified Stromgren and (R,I) photometry, along with DDO and Genevaphotometry, are presented for a complete sample of evolved old-disk Gand K giants in the Bright Star Catalogue. Stars with ages of between1.5 x 10 to the 9th and 10 to the 10th yr are found to have anear-normal distribution of heavy element abundances, centered on anFe/H abundance ratio of -0.1 dex. The old disk clusters NGC 3680 and IC4651 contain red-straggler young-disk giants that are probablycontemporaries of the blue stragglers in the clusters.
| Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G- and K-type stars. II - Observations of evolved stars in the Bright Star sample. III - Evolved young disk stars in the Bright Star sample Four color and RI observations were obtained for a large sample ofG-type and K-type stars in the Bright Star Catalogue. Data are firstpresented for 110 evolved stars. Photometry of evolved young diskpopulation stars have then been calibrated for luminosity, reddening,and metallicity on the basis of results for members of the Hyades andSirius superclusters. New DDO results are given for 120 stars.
| The 'bright stars' with UBV-colors close to those of the sun A compilation is provided of the main physical characteristics of allstars included in the 'Bright Star Catalogue' (and of four fainterstars), which are quoted to be of luminosity class IV a to V b and whichfulfill one of the following conditions: B-V and U-B are close to thesolar values; B-V and spectral type are close to the solar values, whileU-B is unknown; the BSC-spectral type is G2V, but B-V and/or U-B differappreciably from the solar values. The compilation is given tofacilitate the selection of stars which are most suited to serve as asun's proxy in the night-sky or which even can be considered as a 'solaranalog' in as many desired aspects as possible.
| G. P. Kuiper's spectral classifications of proper-motion stars Spectral classifications are listed for over 3200 stars, mainly of largeproper motion, observed and classified by Kuiper during the years1937-1944 at the Yerkes and McDonald Observatories. While Kuiper himselfpublished many of his types, and while improved classifications are nowavailable for many of these stars, much of value remains. For many ofthe objects, no other spectral data exist.
| Solar colors on the 13-color system New photometry for an additional 63 solar-like stars is given. Usingthese new data, three independent methods for defining the solar colorson the 13-color system of photometry give unbiased color estimates forthe sun. The independent color determinations are compared to each otherand to previously selected solar analogs. We suggest that the two starsHR 1662 and HR 3309 deserve additional study as possible solar analogs.An improved absolute calibration of relative colors is also derived forthe 13-color system.

| Possible nearby stars brighter than tenth magnitude Basic data are compiled for 447 stars brighter than 10th visualmagnitude which may be within 25 pc of the sun and are missing from boththe Gliese (1969) and the Woolley et al. (1970) catalogs of nearbystars. The list includes 245 stars with photometric parallaxes, 17 starswith trigonometric parallaxes, and nine stars with dynamical parallaxes,all of which parallaxes are at least 0.040 arcsec, as well as 176 likelycandidates. The stars are grouped into six categories according to thereliability of absolute-magnitude estimates and ranked within each groupon the basis of calculated distance. The distance estimates incorporatea kinematic correction to the photometric parallaxes which is based onthe size of a star's proper motion. A list of stars brighter than 10thmag which appear in the Gliese but not in the Woolley et al. catalog isalso provided to facilitate cross-reference with existing catalogs ofnearby stars.
| Intermediate-band photometry of late-type stars. VI - Main-sequence stars near the sun. VII - The HR 1614 group of overabundant stars Intermediate-band photometry of a complete sample of dwarfs in the solarneighborhood has been undertaken. The photometry of the main-sequencestars is employed to determine the space velocity and metal abundancedistribution near the sun. In comparison with Hyades stars, 12% of thespecimens are overabundant, with the largest percentage, 39%, havingabout one-half the solar abundance. Old disk dwarfs of type G, which maybe given the spectroscopic classification of mild CH in some extremecases, are given particular attention. The multiple system Herschel2621, which may prove important for understanding advanced evolutionaryprocesses, is also discussed.
